HARARE, ZIMBABWE – The price of a standard loaf of bread in Zimbabwe has risen sharply, with a snap survey across major urban centres showing retail prices now ranging between US$1 and US$1.17, as rising fuel costs continue to push up production and distribution expenses.

Drivers say a single fine can wipe out an entire day’s earnings. Another major driver of fare increases is the daily target system imposed by vehicle owners. Operators of newer kombis reportedly demand up to US$140 per day, while older vehicles have targets of around US$110. Drivers argue that a sustainable target should be between US$50 and, US$80, anything higher, they say, makes fare hikes inevitable.
