HARARE — The Harare High Court has delivered a landmark ruling reinforcing the sweeping powers of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) to seize assets over unpaid taxes, even when those assets are claimed by third-party financiers.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed a tribunal to investigate whether Never Katiyo should be removed from office over allegations of gross misconduct. The tribunal will be chaired by retired judge Maphios Cheda and includes legal practitioners Tafadzwa Hungwe and Chaka Mashoko. The move follows a recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), which advised the president in October 2025 that the allegations against Katiyo warranted a formal inquiry.

The High Court will on February 17 decide whether former Cabinet minister Walter Mzembi should be discharged at the close of the State’s case, a ruling that could bring his criminal abuse of office trial to an early end. The decision, to be delivered by Justice Benjamin Chikowero, follows the State’s closure of its case after calling four witnesses, including a senior investigator from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
