Authorities in South Africa have released the names of 43 Zimbabwean nationals who died in a tragic bus crash near Musina, Limpopo, on Sunday evening. The disaster—one of the worst road accidents in the province this year—has plunged families across Zimbabwe and South Africa into mourning.

According to officials, the long-distance coach was travelling from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) to Harare when it lost control on the N1 highway near Ingwe Lodge, outside Makhado. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road and rolled down an embankment before landing on its roof. Forty-two people died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll to 43. Dozens of passengers were injured and remain hospitalised in Limpopo facilities.

Limpopo transport officials described the crash as “a national tragedy,” noting that seven children were among the deceased. Emergency services worked through the night to recover bodies and evacuate survivors, while police cordoned off the site for accident reconstruction experts. Early indications point to possible mechanical failure or speeding, but investigators have yet to confirm the cause.

“We are conducting a full investigation into what led to this devastating loss of life,” said Limpopo Transport Department spokesperson Mike Maringa. “Our thoughts are with all the affected families.

The Zimbabwean Consulate in Johannesburg has deployed officials to assist with victim identification and the repatriation of remains. Families of passengers have been urged to contact South African Police Service (SAPS) stations in Musina or Makhado for information. Community organisations in both countries have begun mobilising support for affected families, including counselling services and financial aid for funerals.
