MASVINGO – A warrant of arrest has been issued against Chirashanye Magora (53), an Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) pastor based in Mucheke, after he failed to appear in court adding to a growing number of cases in which religious leaders are facing serious criminal allegations. The warrant was issued by Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura after Magora missed routine remand proceedings and reportedly stopped reporting to authorities from 8 April 2026.
Magora had earlier been granted bail by Sunsley Zisengwe, under strict conditions requiring him to report twice weekly to Chikato Police Station. His failure to comply has now triggered a manhunt, with his current whereabouts unknown.
The pastor is facing serious charges involving the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl over a period spanning December 2025 to February 2026. According to court papers, Magora allegedly lured the minor into his room, locked the door, and assaulted her, threatening her with death if she revealed the abuse. In another reported incident, the complainant allegedly woke up to find the accused on top of her. Despite her resistance and screams, he is said to have silenced her and issued further threats. The case came to light on 16 February 2026 when the girl fled to Chikato Primary School and reported the matter to headmaster Stanley Zhonje, who immediately alerted the police.
While the case is still before the courts and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty, it has reignited public debate over a perceived rise in cases involving “men of the cloth” facing allegations of abuse, exploitation, and misconduct. Legal and social analysts say such cases are particularly sensitive because they involve positions of trust and moral authority.
“When allegations involve religious leaders, the impact goes beyond the individuals directly affected it shakes community confidence and raises broader questions about accountability,” said a Harare-based legal expert.
Sources in Masvingo say Magora’s absence has not gone unnoticed within his congregation, with reports indicating that only his wife has continued attending services in recent weeks.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging anyone with information on Magora’s whereabouts to come forward as investigations continue. Observers warn that repeated reports of clergy facing criminal allegations risk eroding public trust in religious institutions if not addressed decisively.
They stress the need for:
Strong internal accountability within churches
Prompt reporting of alleged abuse
Cooperation with law enforcement
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to locate Magora and bring him before the courts to answer to the charges. The case remains under active investigation.
