Air Zimbabwe will operate daily return flights between Harare and Mutare from September 8 to 14, 2025, aligning with the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Expo set for Mutare from September 10 to 12.
Chief Executive Officer Edmund Makona said the service is a pilot project to gauge market demand and test the route’s long-term viability. The flights form part of the airline’s turnaround strategy to expand its domestic network and support government efforts to revitalise tourism.
The Eastern Highlands, famed for scenic landscapes and adventure tourism, is expected to benefit from improved air access. The new route links Harare, Mutare, and Victoria Falls, creating opportunities for multi-destination travel.
Air Zimbabwe partnered with PayNow to enable online ticketing. The airline has also worked with the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority to ensure operations run smoothly.
Tourism analyst Rutendo Moyo said direct flights will cut travel time, boost expo attendance, and enhance visitor experiences. Hoteliers in Mutare expect more guests and increased investment, with the service forecast to stimulate demand across accommodation, transport, and local services.
“If the response is positive, we are ready to scale operations and consider a permanent route,” Makona said.
