BEITBRIDGE – A 56-year-old man from Malala Village has been arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing his wife during a family mediation meeting in Matshiloni Village, in a case that has once again spotlighted rising domestic violence incidents in Zimbabwe. The suspect, Mukhosi Shadreck Mulaudzi Muthavhatsindi, is accused of killing his wife following a heated dispute during efforts by both families to resolve long-standing marital issues.

According to Mesuli Ncube, Officer Commanding Beitbridge District, the couple had been living in South Africa before returning to Zimbabwe on April 24, 2026, amid escalating tensions in their marriage. Upon arrival, the two reportedly separated, with Muthavhatsindi going to his home in Malala Village while his wife stayed with relatives in Matshiloni. A family meeting was convened on April 26, involving relatives and a traditional mediator (munyai/idombo), in a bid to reconcile the couple.

“During deliberations, the wife’s relatives suggested that the couple should settle for a divorce since they had failed to reach an amicable agreement for a long period of time. This did not go down well with the suspect, and an argument ensued,” said Chief Superintendent Ncube.

Police say the situation escalated rapidly when the suspect allegedly charged towards his wife during the argument. The woman reportedly fled and sought refuge behind one of the houses, but Muthavhatsindi is said to have caught up with her and stabbed her once in the chest.

“She screamed before collapsing and died on the spot,” Ncube confirmed.

Following the incident, the suspect attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended by members of the public before being handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. He is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court soon.

“The body has been conveyed to the hospital for a post-mortem,” added Ncube.

The incident adds to a growing number of fatal domestic violence cases reported across Zimbabwe, often triggered by unresolved disputes, separation conflicts, and emotional distress. Experts warn that mediation processes, while culturally important, can sometimes escalate tensions if not carefully managed.

“Family interventions are meant to resolve disputes, but without proper safeguards, they can also become flashpoints for violence,” said a Harare-based social analyst.

Authorities and community leaders continue to urge couples facing prolonged disputes to seek professional counselling and legal intervention early, rather than allowing tensions to escalate. The case remains under investigation.
