Harare, Zimbabwe — Rising Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett has etched his name into cricketing folklore after crafting a unique record-breaking innings in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. His sparkling 81 off 57 balls, adorned with 12 boundaries and no sixes, set the benchmark for the highest T20 International score without clearing the ropes among full ICC member nations.

The previous record was jointly held by South Africa’s Faf du Plessis (79*) and Pakistan’s Babar Azam (79). Bennett’s knock not only surpassed these global greats but also showcased an increasingly rare style of batting in an era dominated by power-hitting.

Bennett’s innings was a masterclass in classical stroke play. He carved Sri Lanka’s bowlers through the covers, pierced gaps with deft late cuts, and ran hard between the wickets. “To score 81 in a T20I without a single six shows incredible control and placement,” noted commentator Dean du Plessis. “It was cricket in its purest form.”
Bennett himself was modest, Speaking: “It feels good to hold a record, but I would have traded it for a win. That’s the bittersweet part.”

Despite Bennett’s heroics, Zimbabwe fell short. Sri Lanka chased down the target of 176 with four wickets in hand, powered by Kamindu Mendis’ whirlwind 41 off just 16 balls. For Zimbabwe, it was another reminder of how close they are to competing with the world’s best but also how much work remains in finishing games.

While the record may not directly affect rankings, it has boosted Bennett’s profile. At just 22 years old, he represents the new generation of Zimbabwean talent. Cricket journalist Tristan Holme remarked: “Bennett’s innings is significant not just for the record but for what it says about Zimbabwe’s future—there is skill, patience, and flair coming through.”

This milestone also underscores Zimbabwe’s shifting cricket identity. In an age of towering sixes, Bennett’s knock stood out as a throwback to the artistry of placement and ground strokes. Fans flooded social media with praise, calling him “Zimbabwe’s silent assassin.”

The global record for the highest T20I score without a six remains with Sami Sohail of Malawi, who made 94 against Lesotho in 2022. But among cricket’s elite nations, Bennett now holds the crown.
