HURUNGWE — The community of Hurungwe is in mourning following the tragic death of Tinashe Tadzimigwa, 44, who succumbed to severe injuries sustained in a lion attack near the Zambezi escarpment last week. The incident, which has highlighted the growing dangers of human-wildlife conflict in the region, occurred on Wednesday, April 15, as Tadzimigwa was returning from illegal mining operations in the Mkanga area.

According to local reports, the attack took place around 20:00 in Chikede Village, Ward 9 of the Hurungwe Rural District Council. Tadzimigwa was walking home with a group of companions when they were ambushed by a lone, elderly lion. Observers suggest that the predator's advanced age may have driven its aggressive behavior, as it was likely too weak to hunt active, wild prey, forcing it to target humans instead.

"The deceased fought relentlessly with the old lion, which is too old to hunt active prey," said local villager Dickson Kabura. "Help came too late."

While Tadzimigwa’s companions managed to drive the animal away and prevent further immediate harm, he had already sustained life-threatening abdominal injuries.

Following the attack, Tadzimigwa was rushed to Karoi District Hospital, a journey of approximately 70 kilometres. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away the following afternoon, Thursday, April 16, at around 13:30. Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson, Luckmore Safuli, confirmed the incident, noting the tragic loss of life in the wildlife habitat zones.

The tragedy has reignited concerns regarding illegal gold panning in the Mkanga and Jechenene Mountain areas. These regions, which are also protected wildlife corridors, frequently see high human traffic as miners risk their lives for gold. Environmental experts warn that such activities not only destroy fragile ecosystems but also force communities into direct and often fatal contact with apex predators. As the Zambezi escarpment remains a high-risk area, local authorities and conservationists are urging residents to avoid entering these zones, particularly during hours when wildlife is most active.
