BULAWAYO — A significant shift is taking hold in the Midlands capital as service stations in Bulawayo have begun accepting the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency for fuel purchases. This development signals growing confidence in the local currency and marks a notable departure from the resistance encountered following the ZiG's introduction in April 2024.

While the adoption is a positive step toward government efforts to stabilize the economy and reduce reliance on foreign currencies like the United States dollar, fuel retailers are exercising caution.

  • Market Dynamics: Transactions are currently being processed under controlled conditions, with service stations applying varying exchange rates based on operational considerations.

  • Operational Limits: Most stations are imposing caps on the volume of local-currency sales, often prioritizing large corporate clients who deposit funds for fuel on account.

  • Accountability: Attendants report that daily transaction limits are being enforced to ensure proper monitoring and accountability during this integration phase.

Despite these controls, the system is reportedly operating smoothly, providing convenience to motorists who earn in the local currency.

Economic analysts and business leaders view this expansion into the high-demand fuel sector as a crucial milestone for the currency. Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president Denford Mutashu emphasized that the ZiG is a national sovereign currency and that expanding its usage strengthens demand and confirms its growing stability. Bulawayo-based analyst Reginald Shoko noted that because fuel retailing has historically been one of the most dollarized sectors, even limited acceptance of ZiG is a "meaningful step" that signals potential for wider adoption.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) continues to actively manage the currency's integration. Governor Dr. John Mushayavanhu has acknowledged challenges regarding the limited circulation of ZiG notes, particularly in southern regions where the US dollar and South African rand are deeply entrenched. To address this, the central bank has deployed teams to promote currency acceptance, while Dr. Mushayavanhu remains focused on improving foreign exchange management systems and ensuring stable exchange rate dynamics to support the ZiG’s long-term viability.

While Bulawayo remains heavily influenced by its proximity to South Africa, the combination of tighter monetary controls, increased gold reserves backing the currency, and improved policy consistency is creating a more predictable operating environment, paving the way for the ZiG to play a larger role in everyday transactions.
