A 70-year-old German woman has been reported missing after a hike at Ghost Mountain near Mkhuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal. She was last seen on Friday when she set out with her husband, who later returned to report her absence, police and local sources confirmed.

Mkhuze SAPS launched a search operation after the husband informed authorities that his wife had separated from him during the hike. A police appeal published in the Zululand Observer urged anyone with information to contact Mkhuze detectives as enquiries continue.

Authorities said the woman was last seen on the eastern slopes of Ghost Mountain, a rugged part of the Lebombo range overlooking Mkhuze and the uMkhuze Game Reserve. The terrain is known for its steep trails, dense bush and limited mobile signal. Search teams — including SAPS trackers and local guides — are combing possible routes and thickets where hikers often lose visibility.

Staff at the nearby Ghost Mountain Inn, a major tourist lodge for visitors to the area, said that several hiking groups had included both local and international guests. They confirmed that guides and staff are assisting police and the woman’s family in the ongoing search. Local residents familiar with the terrain noted that the mountain’s trails can be deceptively difficult for older hikers, especially when weather changes rapidly.

Search teams face steep ravines, thick vegetation and poor cellphone coverage that hinder coordination. The Mkhuze airstrip and the Mkuze-to-Tshaneni road serve as the main access points for the rescue operations. Conservation officials warned that rising temperatures and unpredictable weather can increase risks for missing hikers and urged that trained trackers lead the mission.

Police said the husband’s report remains the central account under review. There are no indications of foul play, and the investigation is continuing. Family members in South Africa and Germany have been notified and are working with consular officials and local authorities while travel arrangements are finalized.

Ghost Mountain — or Intaba Yemikhovu — is a culturally significant site famed for its scenic slopes and panoramic views over the uMkhuze Game Reserve. Guides recommend that visitors hike with experienced companions, carry sufficient water and first-aid kits, and use communication devices suited for remote terrain.

Search and rescue operations remain active as police follow up on trailhead registers, guest logs and witness statements. Authorities are also considering aerial searches if the woman is not located soon.
