If it were Area 51, perhaps the mystery would make sense. Alas, this is Glenview Area 8 — Harare’s furniture manufacturing hub known for bursting into flames almost every year at this time.

The pattern is almost religious. As the dry season comes around, so does the Glen View Area 8 fire inferno. Schools of thought have emerged regarding the Harare furniture market fire. Some cite political conspiracy. Others blame human error and poor fire safety. In the community, a few whisper of witchcraft, saying a ritual must be followed religiously.

What is clear is that by this time every year, a fire breaks out in Glenview 8. What remains unclear is why. Authorities are yet to establish a definitive cause. Meanwhile, carpenters count financial losses, families count informal sector jobs lost, and smoke once again hangs over Area 8.
