Residents of Houghton Park in Harare have raised serious concerns over worsening environmental pollution, accusing nearby industries and ongoing construction activities of exposing the community to health risks and deteriorating living conditions.

One resident, who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation, said the community has unsuccessfully tried to engage local authorities over the issue.

“We have tried to engage our councillor, who is our elected representative, but unfortunately we have not received any help,” the resident said.

The resident singled out Varun Beverages Zimbabwe, one of Zimbabwe’s largest beverage manufacturers, alleging that wastewater from the company’s operations is being discharged without a proper drainage system.

According to the complaint, the wastewater reportedly flows openly near the entrance of Houghton Park Primary School, raising fears over possible health hazards for schoolchildren and nearby residents.

“The company is releasing wastewater without a proper drainage system. It flows freely and passes right at the entrance of Houghton Park Primary School. This creates a serious health risk, especially for children,” the resident said.

Residents also complained about strong odours allegedly emitted during the night.

“The most urgent issue is the foul-smelling water they release at night. The smell is so strong that it disturbs sleep and makes it hard to rest. Sleeping in our community has become a nightmare,” the resident added.

In addition to the alleged wastewater problem, residents say heavy construction traffic linked to ongoing road works by the Simon Mazorodze Road rehabilitation project has severely damaged local roads in the area. Community members claim residential roads are now being used as detours for heavy vehicles, leading to excessive dust during the day and increased air pollution at night from nearby industries.

“We are now living in dust and smoke every day and night,” the resident said.

Environmental experts warn that prolonged exposure to untreated wastewater, industrial smoke, and excessive dust can contribute to respiratory illnesses, skin conditions, and water contamination.

Harare-based environmental management consultant Prince Kuipa said industries operating near residential areas have a responsibility to comply with environmental regulations and protect surrounding communities.

“Proper waste management systems and environmental monitoring are critical in preventing long-term health and ecological damage,” he said.

Residents are now appealing to the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the City of Harare, and other relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and intervene before conditions worsen further urgently. They say they are not opposed to industrial development, but want authorities and companies to ensure that communities can coexist safely with businesses operating in the area.

“I sincerely hope something can be done so that residents and industries can coexist peacefully,” the resident said.
