French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered France’s flagship aircraft carrier to deploy to the Mediterranean as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
In a televised address on Tuesday, Macron said he had directed the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier strike group to move toward the region in response to growing threats to key global shipping routes.
“I have ordered the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, its air assets, and its escort of frigates to set course for the Mediterranean,” Macron said.
The deployment comes as global energy markets react to the widening conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Macron said the move aims to help secure maritime routes critical to Europe’s economy.
According to the French president, shipping lanes have come under increasing threat following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, while routes through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea are also at risk due to the expanding conflict.
“We have taken the initiative to build a coalition in order to pool the necessary resources, including military ones, so that traffic can be restored and secured in these sea lanes that are essential to the global economy,” Macron said.
France is also reinforcing its presence in the eastern Mediterranean. Macron confirmed that a French frigate and air defence assets are being deployed to Cyprus. The move comes a day after Iranian-made drones reportedly struck the British Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri on the island.
Macron added that French forces had intercepted and shot down drones to protect the airspace of allied Gulf states. While criticising the escalation, Macron said Iran “bears primary responsibility” for the crisis, but also called for an end to the military strikes as soon as possible.
“The United States of America and Israel have decided to launch military operations conducted outside international law, which we cannot approve of,” he said.
Iran has responded by targeting Israel, Gulf states, and United States facilities across the Middle East, while also threatening shipping traffic in the region.
Macron noted that France has defence agreements with Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which could be affected by retaliatory actions from Tehran. Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France had deployed Rafale fighter jets over the UAE to secure French air and naval installations.
France maintains about 900 military personnel at bases in the UAE, including Rafale aircraft stationed at Al-Dhafra near Abu Dhabi. The country also has about 700 troops serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Macron said two French bases had sustained limited strikes, causing material damage since the conflict began.
