Melie Kerr delivered an outstanding all-round performance as the New Zealand women's national cricket team secured a comfortable victory over the Zimbabwe women's national cricket team in the second One-Day International (ODI) at University of Otago Oval. The win ensured the White Ferns clinched the series after previously defeating Zimbabwe by 180 runs in the opening match, also played in Dunedin. The third and final ODI will take place at the same venue on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe’s innings began with a worrying moment when opener Kelis Ndhlovu was struck on the side of the helmet by a bouncer from fast bowler Bree Illing. Medical staff attended to Ndhlovu on the field before she was taken to the hospital for further assessment. Team officials later confirmed that she was recovering well. After the early setback, Zimbabwe struggled to build partnerships and was eventually dismissed for 102 runs in 29.1 overs.
Captain Melie Kerr proved decisive with the ball, claiming 7 wickets for 34 runs in 9.1 overs, the best bowling figures in her ODI career. Her performance also set a new record for a New Zealand women’s ODI bowler, surpassing the previous mark of 6/10 held by Jackie Lord against India women's national cricket team in 1982.
The remaining wickets were taken by Molly Penfold, who finished with 3 for 17 from four overs. Zimbabwe’s batting struggled against Kerr’s spin, with Modester Mupachikwa the only batter to make a significant contribution, scoring 32 runs.
Kerr capped her performance with the bat, top-scoring for New Zealand with 45 runs from 40 balls in the run chase. She was supported by opener Izzy Gaze, who made 20, while Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 27. Green sealed the win with a boundary in the 17th over, completing a dominant all-round display by the hosts.
