MUTARE – In a ruling that underscores the Zimbabwean judiciary’s "zero-tolerance" policy toward crimes against children, the Mutare Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced two men to 15 years in prison each for the horrific rape of a five-year-old girl. The convicts, the victim’s 49-year-old biological father and his 18-year-old neighbour, received their sentences this week following a harrowing trial that exposed a dual-layered breach of trust in the Nyakamete area of Mutare.

The court established that the abuse occurred between January 25 and 29, 2026. The ordeal began when the father collected the young girl from her mother’s care under the guise of parental visitation. Once at his residence, the father allegedly transformed a place of safety into a site of trauma, locking the child in a room and raping her. The prosecution proved that while the child was purportedly under her father's protection, she was subjected to systematic abuse.

The horror was compounded by the actions of the second offender. Taking advantage of the father’s absence during the same period, the 18-year-old neighbour forcibly took the girl to his quarters. To ensure his crime went undetected, the teenager reportedly covered the five-year-old’s mouth to silence her screams before raping her.

The trauma was uncovered on January 29 when the child was returned to her mother. The mother immediately observed that the girl was struggling to walk, a clear physical indicator of severe trauma. Upon gentle questioning, the child disclosed the abuse suffered at the hands of both her father and the neighbour. The subsequent medical report and the child’s testimony formed the backbone of a successful prosecution, leading to the maximum-tier sentencing.

While 15 years is a significant custodial sentence, many child rights advocates in Manicaland argue that cases involving biological parents should carry even harsher penalties due to the unique "duty of care" owed to the victim. This ruling, however, sends a clear signal: the Zimbabwean courts will not hesitate to remove predators from society, regardless of their proximity to the victim.
