MVURWI — A 32‑year‑old woman, Thandiwe Kangara, was arrested on 4 March 2026 at Chihwe Village 2 Farm in Mvurwi in connection with a suspected case of infanticide, police confirmed. In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Kangara allegedly gave birth alone to a baby girl before strangling the infant and burying the body in a shallow grave about 10 metres from her homestead.

The matter came to light after a juvenile returning from school noticed that Kangara’s pregnancy was no longer visible and alerted a relative, prompting further inquiries. Police said the case was reported to ZRP Vivelkia Post on 5 March, leading to Kangara’s arrest. The infant’s body was exhumed and taken to Guruve Hospital mortuary for a post‑mortem examination.

Police statement

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Thandiwe Kangara (32) in connection with a case of infanticide which occurred on 04/03/2026 at Chihwe Village 2 Farm, Mvurwi. Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly gave birth alone to a baby girl and subsequently strangled the infant with her hands before burying the body in a shallow grave about 10 metres from her homestead.”

Cases of infanticide, though rare, highlight ongoing challenges around maternal health, access to counselling, and community awareness in rural areas. Authorities often urge communities to report suspected incidents promptly and to support vulnerable women with medical and social services to prevent tragedies. Police investigations are continuing, and Kangara is expected to appear in court soon.
