NYANGA – Police in Nyanga are searching for an acting deputy headmaster who is wanted in connection with the alleged indecent assault of a 17-year-old learner.

Simon Muzerengi, the acting deputy headmaster at Claremont High School, is being sought by police following an incident that allegedly occurred on 19 June at his residence in Nyanga.

According to a police report, Muzerengi is facing an allegation of indecent assault as defined under Section 67 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23]. The matter is being investigated under ZRP Nyanga Received Book Number 6850644.

Police allege that the Form Three learner visited Muzerengi's home to return a cellphone that he had given her earlier that day for safekeeping. The report states that after the learner arrived, she knocked on the door and informed him that she wanted to return the phone. She was allegedly instructed to place it inside the house after indicating that a window through which she had initially been told to leave it was closed.

According to the police report, once the learner entered the house, Muzerengi allegedly locked the door and told her that he loved her. The learner reportedly asked him to unlock the door. Investigators further allege that Muzerengi later left the house, locking the learner inside, before returning a short time later. Police say he then allegedly touched the learner inappropriately without her consent. The alleged incident was interrupted when other members of staff and learners arrived at the residence and knocked on the door. According to the police report, three teachers and two learners were present when the door was opened.

The matter was reported to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Nyanga on 23 June, and the complainant was referred to Nyanga District Hospital for medical examination. Police attended the scene, but the suspect had reportedly left before officers arrived. When contacted by The Manica Post, Manicaland Provincial Education Director Richard Gabaza said he had not yet received details of the case.

"I don't have this case. Please wait for my inquiries," Gabaza was quoted as saying.

The provincial education office had reportedly not received an official report on the matter more than 10 working days after the alleged incident. Police investigations are continuing, and authorities have appealed for information that may assist in locating the suspect. As the matter is before law enforcement, the allegations remain untested in court, and Muzerengi is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
