HARARE — The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has officially scheduled by-elections for four rural wards to be held on Saturday, 20 June 2026. The announcement follows the notification of vacancies in Chiredzi and Tsholotsho Rural District Councils (RDCs).

According to an election notice issued by ZEC Chief Elections Officer Simbarashe Tongayi, the polls will cover the following areas:

  • Chiredzi RDC: Ward 9.

  • Tsholotsho RDC: Wards 1, 10, and 21.

The vacancies arose under different circumstances across the two districts:

  • Chiredzi: The seat became vacant following the death of the incumbent councillor.

  • Tsholotsho: The three seats fell vacant "by operation of law" after a Tribunal found the incumbent councillors guilty of unspecified charges.

In accordance with the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], ZEC has outlined the following roadmap for the upcoming polls:

  • Nomination Courts: Will sit on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

  • Nomination Venues:

    • For Chiredzi: The RDC Boardroom at 69 Inyathi Road.

    • For Tsholotsho: The RDC Boardroom in Tsholotsho.

  • Polling Day: If contests are necessary, voting will proceed on 20 June 2026.

The notice was published under Section 121A (2) of the Electoral Act, ensuring the constitutional requirement to fill local government vacancies is met within the stipulated timeframe.
