Samuel Centenary Crowned Under-13 Soccer Champions at Thrilling Harare Tournament

Samuel Centenary Junior School underlined its growing reputation as one of Harare's emerging football powerhouses after winning the Samuel Centenary Under-13 Boys Soccer Tournament held at the school's junior grounds on Saturday. The hosts produced a series of commanding performances to lift the title ahead of a competitive field that included Canonbury Junior School, Masaisai Primary School, Aftercare, Matilda Primary School, St Eurit Primary School, MBC1 and MBC2 from Dzivarasekwa.

In a day filled with exciting football and outstanding young talent, MBC2 finished as runners-up, while MBC1 claimed third place after a spirited campaign. The tournament showcased some of the brightest young footballers in Harare, with spectators treated to skilful dribbling, incisive passing and disciplined team play throughout the competition.

Samuel Centenary Impresses with Team Football

Samuel Centenary's triumph was built on excellent organisation, tactical discipline and teamwork rather than home-ground advantage. From the opening whistle, the hosts demonstrated why their junior football programme continues to produce quality players capable of competing against the best schools and academies. Their ability to play as a cohesive unit stood out, with intelligent movement, quick passing and defensive discipline proving decisive.

The partnership between playmaker Delan Masukuma and striker Tonderai Madya proved one of the highlights of the tournament. Masukuma repeatedly unlocked defences with defence-splitting passes, while Madya's pace, intelligent runs and clinical finishing left opposition defenders struggling to contain him. The performances reflected the strong football culture being nurtured at Samuel Centenary, whose senior teams have also been making significant strides in inter-school competitions.

Individual Brilliance Lights Up Tournament

Although Samuel Centenary emerged deserved champions, several players from other schools also produced memorable performances. Runners-up MBC2, led by outstanding midfielder Sean Kawondera, displayed exceptional individual talent throughout the tournament. Kawondera's close control, creativity and vision earned him the Player of the Tournament award after consistently driving his team forward.

Football enthusiasts in attendance noted that the Dzivarasekwa side possessed immense natural ability and flair, characteristics long associated with the suburb's rich football heritage. Greater tactical discipline could have made them genuine title contenders.

• Third Place: MBC1

• Best Goalkeeper: Mukudzei Makwanya (Samuel Centenary Junior School)

• Golden Boot: Tonderai Madya (Samuel Centenary Junior School)

• Player of the Tournament: Sean Kawondera (MBC [2])

• Most Promising Player: Munashe Ziwa (St Eurit Primary School)

Other standout performers included Macheso David (Matilda), Brandon Mudzimu (MBC [1]), Tanaka Nyakudya (Aftercare) and Ammar Khan (St Eurit).

The tournament was sponsored by ANDIVEST (Pvt) Ltd, a Zimbabwean company specialising in detergent manufacturing, professional cleaning services, fumigation, landscaping, personal protective equipment (PPE), laundry equipment and cleaning consumables.

Speaking to Southerton Business Times, ANDIVEST founder and director Simbaratenzi Machingura praised both the organisation and the quality of football on display.

"We were very happy. The organisation was excellent and the level of talent from the Under-13 boys was impressive. It was a well-run event that truly showcased the future of soccer in Zimbabwe."

Explaining why the company supports junior football, Machingura said:

"We support junior soccer because it builds character. It teaches children discipline, teamwork and respect. It also promotes health and gives young people a positive outlet that keeps them away from drug abuse and other harmful influences."

He added that ANDIVEST's community involvement extends beyond sport.

Apart from sports, we support school health and hygiene programmes, including our partnership with Masaisai Primary School to supply detergent products and cleaning services. We also support youth development and health initiatives in the communities we serve."

With the standard of football displayed throughout the tournament, many of the young players will undoubtedly be ones to watch as they progress through Zimbabwe's football development pathway.
