The Zimbabwe Sables returned triumphantly to Harare today, basking in the glow of their historic Rugby Africa Cup victory in Uganda. The energy at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport was electric, as thousands of fans, family members, and Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) officials assembled to welcome the heroes home. The terminal erupted in a chorus of song, dance, and ululation. Fans draped in national flags and rugby jerseys created a carnival atmosphere, with some waving homemade signs that read: "Welcome Home, Heroes!" Others sang rugby chants and traditional songs. ZimSportLive called it "a rousing welcome fit for champions."

Social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram were ablaze with videos of the emotional arrival. Viral footage showed the team—led by Captain Hilton Mudariki—stepping out of the arrivals gate holding the Africa Cup trophy aloft, greeted by thunderous cheers.

“This is what we play for—to put smiles on people’s faces,” said Mudariki, visibly moved. He paid tribute to the squad’s mental strength and unity, noting, “The belief in each other is what got us here.”

Head Coach Piet Benade, in his remarks to the media, called the moment “the first of many baby steps” in Zimbabwe’s rugby comeback. He emphasized the need for investment in warm-up matches, player welfare, facilities, and sponsorship, warning that “momentum can be lost without infrastructure and commitment.” The significance of the win is immense. Zimbabwe’s Sables not only lifted the Africa Cup but ended a 23-year losing streak to Namibia, long seen as the team to beat in Southern African rugby. Rugby commentators and national sports journalists alike have hailed this as a revival of Zimbabwe’s rugby credentials.

The Sables’ return also attracted corporate representatives from key brands and sponsors. Their presence at the airport hinted at a possible surge in branding, sponsorship, and commercial partnerships, a promising development as Zimbabwe eyes qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. A victory parade is expected to move through Harare’s central business district later this week, alongside a public fundraising campaign aimed at preparing the Sables for international test matches and qualification fixtures.
