GWERU — Two men drowned on 24 February 2025 while taking part in traditional rituals at Clydesdale Dam, authorities confirmed.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said 15 people 10 women and five men, had gathered at the dam when the incident occurred. Rescue teams, including officers from the Sub Aqua Unit, recovered the bodies the following day.
One of the deceased has been positively identified as 46‑year‑old Philemon Matavire of Woodlands, Gweru. The second man remains unidentified as investigations continue, Inspector Mahoko said. Police have opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Rescue response and investigation
Rescue and recovery operations were carried out by specialised teams after the fatalities were reported. Inspector Mahoko urged members of the public to avoid taking unnecessary risks around deep water bodies and warned that even culturally significant gatherings can become dangerous without proper safety measures.
Authorities said the investigation will establish the precise sequence of events and whether any safety or criminal issues contributed to the drownings. Police asked anyone with information to come forward to assist with inquiries.
Safety message
The tragic incident underscores the hazards posed by rivers, dams, and other deep water bodies. Officials reminded communities to:
Avoid entering deep water without appropriate safety equipment and trained supervision.
Keep vulnerable people, children, the elderly, and non‑swimmers away from open water during gatherings.
Notify local authorities before holding events near water so safety arrangements can be considered.
Report missing persons immediately to speed up search and rescue efforts.
