Richmark Zimbabwe Mine Operations

HARARE – Employees at Richmark Zimbabwe, a Chinese-owned contractor working for Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ), have raised concerns over alleged health and safety violations at the company's mining operations, claiming workers are being exposed to hazardous conditions while operating defective equipment.

In a complaint submitted to this publication, a worker who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation alleged that one of the excavators currently being used at the mine has a broken front windscreen and remains in service despite the defect.

According to the employee, operators are being required to continue working while exposed to significant amounts of lithium dust and other mining-related hazards. The worker further claimed that management has been dismissive of concerns raised by employees regarding workplace safety.

"Whenever workers raise concerns about these unsafe conditions, management reportedly tells employees that if they are not satisfied, they are free to leave," the employee alleged.

The worker said this response has created an atmosphere in which employees are reluctant to report safety issues for fear of losing their jobs or facing retaliation. The allegations also extend to a recent visit by officials from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.

According to the employee, ministry representatives visited the site but allegedly failed to thoroughly investigate the working conditions being experienced by mine workers.

"What is particularly disturbing is that officials from the Ministry of Mines visited the site yesterday. However, instead of thoroughly investigating the conditions faced by workers, they appeared more interested in taking photographs and selfies inside the pit," the employee claimed.

The worker called for an independent investigation into the conditions at the mine and urged authorities to ensure employees have access to safe equipment, adequate protective measures, and fair treatment.

"We appeal for urgent intervention and an independent investigation into these workplace conditions before lives are put at risk. Workers deserve safe equipment, proper protection, and fair treatment regardless of who owns or manages the company," the employee said.

Southerton Business Times was unable to immediately obtain comment from Richmark Zimbabwe, Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, or the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development. The publication will seek responses from the companies and relevant authorities. Their comments will be incorporated once received.

Editor's Note: The allegations contained in this report are claims made by an employee and have not yet been independently verified. Relevant authorities and the companies concerned are encouraged to respond.
