Zimbabwe is mourning the death of outspoken opposition politician and human rights activist Linda Masarira, whose passing was confirmed on Sunday, 24 May 2026.
Masarira, the president of the Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) and a former presidential aspirant, died at the age of 43, prompting an outpouring of grief from political figures, activists and supporters across the country.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana joined many Zimbabweans in paying tribute to Masarira’s contribution to national discourse and political activism.
“It is with a heavy heart that I mark the passing of Ms. Linda Masarira, a loss that leaves us all diminished. May she find eternal peace,” Mangwana wrote on X.
He added:
“Linda never hesitated to lend her voice to the nation’s most pressing conversations. In her absence, we are left so much poorer.”

Popular Dynamos FC supporters’ platform DeMbare DotComs also remembered Masarira as a passionate football supporter and committed political activist.
“We are deeply saddened to celebrate the life of the indomitable Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, who transitioned to eternal rest in her sleep,” the platform said.
The group noted that Masarira had once been an active member of the Dynamos Bulawayo Chapter before dedicating herself fully to politics and activism.
Masarira’s close associate, Abigale Mupambi, confirmed the death in a public notice shared on Sunday morning.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart to announce the passing on of a close friend and associate, a comrade to many, LEAD president Linda Tsungirirai Masarira.”
Speaking to local media, Mupambi revealed that Masarira had been battling health challenges in recent months but had appeared to be recovering.
“I was with her on Friday, and we spent several hours together at my office. She was fine, and there was no sign that something like this would happen,” she said.
The exact cause of death had not yet been officially disclosed by family members or authorities at the time of publication.
Masarira was widely recognised for her outspoken activism on women’s rights, labour issues and social justice. She first entered mainstream politics through the People's Democratic Party led by Tendai Biti before later becoming spokesperson for the Movement for Democratic Change Tsvangirai faction led by Thokozani Khupe. In 2019, she founded the LEAD party, positioning it as a movement focused on labour rights, economic justice and grassroots empowerment.
Masarira also attracted national attention during the 2023 elections after expressing frustration over the sharp increase in presidential nomination fees by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, which she argued disadvantaged smaller political parties and independent candidates. Over the years, she became one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable female political voices, known for her candid commentary on governance, economic hardship and social inequality. Her death marks the end of a significant chapter in Zimbabwean activism and opposition politics.
