CHIPINGE, Zimbabwe — There were tears of joy and celebrations in Chipinge over the weekend after the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) granted a female inmate a rare compassionate leave to attend her daughter’s traditional marriage ceremony.

Sarah Simango, who is serving a four-year sentence for robbery at Chipinge Prison, was permitted to witness her daughter, Patience Sibiya, formalize her marriage under strict prison escort. The event took place in the Gaza Medium Suburb of Chipinge, where the groom, Tafadzwa Usore, and his family performed the traditional Ndau marriage rites.

Dressed for the occasion but under the watchful eye of correctional officers, Simango described the gesture as a profound restoration of her maternal dignity.

“I thought I would miss this monumental day, and it would have become a wound in my heart forever,” an emotional Simango told reporters. “Being here today means everything to my daughter and me. It shows that being incarcerated does not mean my role as a mother is completely erased.”

The groom’s family fulfilled the lobola (bride price) requirements, presenting groceries and traditional tokens in strict accordance with Ndau cultural practices.

Speaking at the homestead, Chipinge Prison Rehabilitation Officer, Correctional Officer Grade One McDonald Garapo, noted that the decision aligns with modern correctional reforms in Zimbabwe.

“As an organization, humanity is one of our core values,” Garapo said. “We commit ourselves to treating everyone with human dignity. By allowing Sarah to fulfill this important family obligation, we are living up to our rehabilitation and reintegration values.”

The decision has been hailed by legal and human rights experts as a progressive step for the Zimbabwean justice system. Harare-based human rights lawyer, Tendai Mandaza, commented on the development:

"This is a milestone for prison reform in Zimbabwe. Section 50 of our Constitution emphasizes the humane treatment of detainees. Allowing an inmate to attend a landmark family event aids psychological rehabilitation, making reintegration into society much smoother upon release."

Local residents in Gaza Medium Suburb expressed pleasant surprise.

“At first, we were shocked to see prison wardens at a wedding,” said eyewitness and neighbor, Miriam Dhliwayo. “But when we saw the mother hugging her daughter, everyone started cheering. It was a beautiful act of compassion from the government.”

Following the conclusion of the Ndau marriage rites, Simango was safely escorted back to Chipinge Prison. Authorities report that the move has significantly boosted morale and given hope to other inmates awaiting social reintegration.
