HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed as false a widely circulated statement on the alleged assault of lawyer Douglas Coltart, while confirming that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
In a clarification issued on April 3, police said the message being shared on social media platforms did not originate from the organisation and should be disregarded.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) advises the public that it has not issued any statement regarding the alleged assault of Douglas Coltart. The message circulating on social media is therefore false and misleading,” the police said.
Despite dismissing the viral statement, police confirmed that a formal complaint has been lodged and that investigations are now underway.
“The police confirm that a report of the alleged assault has been received and investigations are currently underway,” the ZRP said.
Authorities added that updates on the case will only be communicated through official police channels.
The alleged assault reportedly occurred at Harare City Sports Centre during a parliamentary public hearing, an event that has drawn significant public attention. The case has sparked debate online, with many calling for swift action from law enforcement.
The police clarification follows the circulation of a detailed press statement falsely attributed to the ZRP, which claimed to address the incident and even referenced alleged suspects. The fake statement suggested the case had political implications and could affect the pace of investigations, further fuelling speculation online. However, the ZRP has categorically rejected the document as inauthentic.
The police statement, posted on X, triggered mixed reactions from the public. Some users welcomed confirmation that investigations are in progress, while others questioned the pace of action.
“Thank you. That’s what we want to hear—that investigations are underway,” one user commented.
Others raised concerns about delays in arrests and the lack of detailed updates from authorities.
The ZRP reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged the public to rely only on verified communication channels for accurate information. Investigations into the alleged assault are continuing.
