HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued an urgent disclaimer regarding a fraudulent recruitment notice circulating on social media platforms. The hoax, which falsely claimed that the police force had opened applications for new officers, has been dismissed as a malicious attempt to mislead the public.

In a formal statement released this weekend, the police leadership urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and refrain from sharing unverified employment advertisements. The ZRP emphasized that all official recruitment drives are conducted through established, transparent channels.

“The ZRP dismisses a false and misleading statement circulating on social media regarding the recruitment of police officers. Members of the public are advised to disregard the statement,” the police cautioned.

The authorities further clarified that a formal notice for genuine recruitment will be issued through official state media and ZRP communication platforms at the "appropriate time."

The rise of such hoaxes often precedes "recruitment fee" scams, where fraudsters solicit payments from desperate job seekers under the guise of processing fees or medical examinations. This incident follows a recent internal ZRP directive ordering the immediate removal of social media posts featuring officers in uniform, part of a broader effort to tighten digital discipline and prevent the misuse of the police brand.

To protect the public from falling victim to employment fraud, the ZRP has provided direct lines for verification. Citizens are encouraged to contact the following desks before acting on any social media "opportunities":

  • National Complaints Desk: (024) 2703631

  • Official WhatsApp Line: 0712 800 197

The ZRP’s move to nationwide body-worn cameras and increased digital monitoring highlights a shift toward higher transparency, making it easier for the public to distinguish between official conduct and fraudulent activity.
