Bus Driver Dies, 11 Injured in Crash Near Beitbridge While Transporting Malawian Repatriates

BEITBRIDGE – A bus driver transporting Malawian nationals from KwaZulu-Natal to a repatriation camp near Beitbridge Border Post was killed and 11 passengers injured after the vehicle overturned on South Africa's N1 highway in the early hours of Wednesday. The crash occurred about four kilometres south of the Beitbridge Border Post near Musina, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.

Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said preliminary investigations indicate the driver may have lost control of the bus due to fatigue.

"According to preliminary reports, the bus was transporting individuals from KwaZulu-Natal to the Repatriation Camp in Beitbridge when it was involved in a crash after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue, causing it to overturn," Mabata said.

She confirmed that the driver died at the scene.

"The driver has been confirmed deceased, while 11 passengers sustained injuries."

The injured passengers were taken to Musina Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Emergency medical personnel, traffic officers and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene to assist victims and manage traffic.

Although the N1 remained open following the crash, Mabata said temporary road closures could be implemented to allow forensic investigators to examine the scene.

"Motorists travelling along the route are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and comply with the instructions of traffic officials on the scene," she said.

She added that the department would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as investigations progress.

The accident occurred as South Africa experiences an increase in voluntary repatriations by foreign nationals amid heightened anti-immigration tensions. On Tuesday, more than 20 civic organisations led by the March and March Movement staged demonstrations across all nine South African provinces, demanding the departure of undocumented foreign nationals. The movement has set an unofficial deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country voluntarily, prompting many Zimbabwean, Malawian and other foreign nationals to seek assistance from their respective governments to return home.

Authorities in both South Africa and Zimbabwe have appealed for calm, stressing that migration should be managed through lawful processes and warning against acts of violence or vigilantism targeting foreign nationals. Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
