Explosives found on a truck from Zimbabwe enroute to South Africa

HARARE — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a vigorous awareness campaign following a harrowing explosion involving a commuter omnibus, issuing an uncompromising warning to the public regarding the illegal transportation of explosives. In an official statement released today, April 21, 2026, the police force emphasized that the carriage of explosives in public transport or any civilian vehicle is not only illegal but also represents a catastrophic risk to human life.

The ZRP underscored that the Explosives Act, Chapter 10:08, strictly governs the transportation of such hazardous materials. Under these regulations, unauthorized possession or movement of explosives is a severe criminal offence. The police statement was categorical in clarifying that there are no exceptions for civilian or public service transport:

“Public service vehicles, family or private vehicles are not allowed or permitted to carry explosives for whatever reason.”

Authorities reiterated that these stringent restrictions are designed specifically to safeguard travellers and prevent the kind of disaster that recently unfolded on a public commuter vehicle.

The police are calling on citizens to act as the first line of defence against potential tragedies. Members of the public are urged to report any suspicion of explosives being carried in public transport, family cars, or private vehicles immediately.

How to Report Suspicious Activity:

  • ZRP National Complaints Desk: (0242) 703631

  • WhatsApp: 0712 800 197

  • In Person: Report to the nearest police station.

The ZRP stressed that timely reporting is critical to intervention and the prevention of further loss of life.

The handling of explosives is a highly regulated sector under the mandate of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development. The ZRP clarified that explosives can only be acquired, stored, and transported under strict, prescribed legal conditions.

For the mining and construction industries, this includes:

  • Authorized Storage: Explosives must be kept in approved "magazines" as prescribed by the Ministry.

  • Licensing: Only authorized personnel with the relevant licenses may handle or move these materials.

The police concluded the statement with a firm commitment to impartial enforcement, warning that those who disregard these safety protocols will face the full weight of the law, "without fear or favour."
