High Court in Gweru where Brighton Kadhlanga was sentenced.

GWERU, Zimbabwe – A 31-year-old man from Chinyama Village under Chief Gambiza in Gweru has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife after accusing her of infidelity. The High Court sitting in Gweru on Tuesday convicted Brighton Kadhlanga of murdering his wife, Patience Madula, 26, in a shocking case of domestic violence that has renewed calls for peaceful conflict resolution within families and communities.

According to court proceedings, the fatal incident occurred on 20 December 2025 after Kadhlanga returned home from Maguma Business Centre at around 7 pm. The court heard that upon arriving home, Kadhlanga confronted Madula inside a kitchen hut where she was seated with her mother-in-law and the couple’s two-year-old son. He accused his wife of engaging in an extramarital affair and threatened to kill both her and their child.

Fearing for their safety, Madula’s mother-in-law fled the homestead with the toddler, leaving the couple alone.

In a violent outburst, Kadhlanga allegedly attacked Madula with a burning log before striking her twice on the head with a three-legged aluminium pot. The assault left her with severe head injuries, deep cuts on her legs, and multiple bruises across her body. The court was told that later that night, Kadhlanga telephoned Madula’s brother and informed him that he intended to kill her because of the alleged affair.

During the call, Madula reportedly managed to speak to her brother, telling him that she had been severely assaulted and could no longer walk. Police attended the scene during the early hours of 21 December 2025 and discovered Madula’s lifeless body inside the kitchen hut. A post-mortem examination later revealed that she died from severe head trauma, brain injury, and subarachnoid haemorrhage resulting from the assault.

Following the attack, Kadhlanga fled the area and evaded capture for several days. He was eventually arrested on 31 December 2025 and subsequently charged with murder. In delivering the sentence, the High Court described the killing as both brutal and premeditated, emphasising that domestic violence can never be justified regardless of the circumstances. The court noted that the attack demonstrated extreme violence and disregard for human life, warranting a lengthy custodial sentence.

The case highlights the continued prevalence of gender-based violence and domestic abuse in Zimbabwe, where advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger interventions to protect vulnerable women and children.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) urged members of the public to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving domestic disputes. The NPA also encouraged communities to report threats, intimidation, and violence before situations escalate into tragedy. Authorities say early intervention, counselling, and community support remain critical tools in preventing domestic violence-related deaths across the country.
