SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA — A community is in deep mourning today following a domestic tragedy of unimaginable proportions. In the early hours of Sunday, April 19, a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, resulted in the deaths of eight children, aged between three and 11. The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, reportedly carried out the attack in a spree that began at a residence around 05:00 local time before continuing at a second location.
The victims, who included siblings and one cousin, were targeted in what police are describing as a domestic disturbance. The aftermath was described by first responders as devastating. In a harrowing turn of events, some children managed to survive the initial onslaught. One child displayed immense bravery by running to a nearby home to alert authorities, while another managed to escape by jumping from a roof. Both survivors are currently receiving medical attention. Two adult women, including the children’s mother, also sustained gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition. Police spokesperson Chris Bordelon confirmed the suspect acted alone, stating:
“We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations.”

Following the attack, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. A dramatic police pursuit ensued, ending in neighbouring Bossier Parish, where Elkins was fatally shot during a confrontation with officers. While official investigations into the motive remain ongoing, relatives of the suspect have pointed to a rapid deterioration in Elkins' mental health, allegedly triggered by an impending divorce.
“After the first argument about the divorce, he acted like he was losing his mind,” relative Troy Brown told The Washington Post.
The scale of the loss has left the city of Shreveport reeling. Mayor Tom Arceneaux highlighted the profound emotional toll this event has placed on the entire region.
“We have hurting families, we have hurting police officers, coroners' personnel. This affects the entire community, so we all mourn with these families,” the Mayor stated.
The statistical impact of the shooting is also stark. Local councillor Grayson Boucher noted that the city's homicide rate for the year has more than doubled as a result of this single act of domestic violence, underscoring the lethal potential when private disputes turn into public tragedies. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry issued a brief statement expressing that the state is "heartbroken over this horrific situation." As the investigations continue, the city of Shreveport struggles to process the loss of eight young lives, a tragedy that serves as a grim reminder of the critical need for early intervention in volatile domestic situations.
