MASVINGO – A chilling act of domestic violence has left a Masvingo family shattered after a 33-year-old artisanal miner allegedly murdered his wife with an axe before setting multiple homesteads ablaze, leaving eight schoolchildren homeless and destitute.

The suspect, Morgen Gwasira, remains at large following the violent rampage that occurred in Machingambi Village, Gwanha area, Ward 13, under Chief Mugabe’s jurisdiction. Police reports indicate that Gwasira struck his wife, Liliosa Gwenhamo (34), in the head with an axe while seated in a kitchen hut with her and their four children. He then attempted to ignite the hut with petrol, reportedly intending to take his own life and that of his children. The children managed to escape before the fire engulfed the structure.

According to witnesses, Gwasira dragged his wife’s body outside, stacked firewood on it, and set it alight. His rampage continued as he moved to his uncle’s and father’s homesteads, burning a total of six huts and a pigsty, killing three pigs in the process. The attack left the extended family completely destitute, with all belongings, documents, and food supplies destroyed.

Acting Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, confirmed the incident and appealed to the public for assistance. “Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who escaped after killing his wife and torching three homesteads. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should report to the nearest police station,” he said.

Relatives and neighbors described Gwasira as a man with a long history of violent and unstable behavior. “He once destroyed property at his father’s home while speaking incoherently,” said one relative. His mother reportedly fled the scene in fear for her life after overhearing an argument moments before the attack.

The fires destroyed all family property, including clothing, furniture, national IDs, and school documents, leaving eight school-aged children without shelter, uniforms, or books. Gwasira’s eldest child had just completed Grade Seven examinations when the tragedy struck.

Community leaders have launched an appeal for food, clothing, and school supplies to support the affected families. They have also called for stronger mental health and domestic violence interventions in rural communities. As police continue the manhunt, authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation to bring the suspect to justice and provide relief to the survivors.
