NRZ Warns Motorists After Train Collides with Pick-Up at Ruwa Level Crossing

HARARE – The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has renewed its appeal for motorists to observe level crossing safety rules following another collision between a train and a vehicle at the Ruwa level crossing. The latest incident occurred on Monday when a pick-up truck was struck by a train after the driver allegedly failed to give way to the approaching locomotive. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the accident has once again highlighted the dangers of ignoring traffic regulations at railway crossings.

In a statement, the NRZ said the collision was avoidable and urged motorists to prioritise safety whenever approaching rail crossings.

"The accident could have been avoided if the driver had observed level crossing rules," the parastatal said.

The railway operator has reminded motorists that trains require long distances to stop and always have the right of way at level crossings. Drivers have been urged to slow down, stop where necessary, look carefully in both directions and listen for approaching trains before proceeding across railway tracks.

The NRZ also warned against attempting to race trains across crossings, saying such decisions frequently result in serious or fatal accidents.

"We urge all public transport operators and motorists to always stop, look and listen before crossing railway lines. Trains cannot stop instantly and may approach from either direction," the NRZ said.

The latest collision adds to a series of accidents recorded at railway level crossings across Zimbabwe, many of which have been attributed to driver negligence, failure to obey road signs and risky attempts to beat approaching trains. Road safety experts have consistently urged motorists to exercise patience at railway crossings, noting that even low-speed train collisions can cause catastrophic damage because of the enormous weight and momentum of locomotives.

The NRZ continues to conduct public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing accidents at level crossings, particularly along busy urban routes and major highways where road and rail traffic intersect. Authorities are encouraging motorists to remain vigilant at all times and to treat every level crossing as a potential hazard, regardless of whether warning lights, boom gates or railway personnel are present. The railway operator said improved compliance with road traffic regulations is essential to preventing unnecessary loss of life, injuries and damage to property.
