In a major blow to illegal gold mining in Zimbabwe, law enforcement agents have impounded 12 heavy-duty excavators during a high-stakes raid along the Mutare River near Beauly. The machinery, suspected to be owned by Chinese nationals, was discovered hidden in thick brush as miners attempted to evade a coordinated security crackdown.
The recovery was the result of a Joint Operation Command (JOC) exercise involving the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS). Manicaland provincial Acting Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the machinery was recovered last Thursday. The seized fleet includes:
CMD units
XCMG machines (two units)
CAT (Caterpillar) models
Carter models
“It is believed the illegal miners had been alerted to the impending operation and attempted to conceal the equipment in advance,” Asst. Insp. Chinyoka stated. The excavators remain under heavy police guard at the site.
The operation extended beyond the riverbanks to Chikanga Farm, where 11 suspects were apprehended. While the group was found with a significant cache of artisanal mining equipment, they were not actively mining at the time and have been charged with criminal trespass. The police recovered a variety of tools used in illegal gold extraction, including:
100 metres of PVC piping and submersible water pumps
Gas blowers, generators, and heavy-duty hammers
Shovels, mattocks, and a wheelbarrow
Among the arrested are individuals hailing from as far as Kambuzuma, Chiredzi, Guruve, and Chinhoyi, highlighting the widespread nature of the illegal mining networks in Manicaland.
The JOC also targeted Champion Mine, uncovering a concealed wash plant and generator guarded by private security officers from Melta Security Company. The guards, Douglas Maocha and Maxwell Mika, allegedly implicated Peter Makunura of Yungtech Private Limited, who has since been taken into custody. This development suggests that "illegal" operations are often sophisticated fronts for registered entities flouting Zimbabwe mining regulations.
This raid is part of an ongoing government effort to curb riverbed mining and environmental degradation. The Mutare River has long been a flashpoint for gold smuggling and water pollution. Authorities have vowed to continue dismantling these networks to restore order to the province’s mineral-rich corridors.
