BAMAKO — The Sahel region is reeling following a wave of unprecedented, coordinated attacks across Mali this weekend, which claimed the life of Defence Minister General Sadio Camara. The offensive, described by analysts as the most significant security breach in the country’s modern history, has plunged the junta-led nation into a state of acute instability.

The most high-profile casualty of the violence occurred in Kati, a heavily fortified military garrison town roughly 15km north-west of the capital, Bamako. According to government spokesperson General Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, Minister Camara’s residence was targeted early Saturday morning by a suicide attacker driving a vehicle laden with explosives.

The impact was devastating. The blast not only destroyed part of the residence but also leveled a nearby mosque, resulting in several civilian deaths among worshippers. Reports from the minister's family and international media outlets have confirmed that, in addition to the General, his second wife and two grandchildren were killed in the assault. General Camara reportedly engaged in a firefight with the militants, neutralizing several assailants before succumbing to critical injuries in a hospital.

The assault on Kati was a central component of a sweeping, simultaneous operation that struck multiple strategic points across the country starting at approximately 5:20 AM on Saturday. Attacks were reported in:

  • Bamako: Gunfire and explosions near the international airport forced the cancellation of all flights.

  • Northern and Central Hubs: Intense fighting broke out in Gao, Mopti, Sévaré, and Kidal.

In a historic and alarming development, the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) acknowledged they had coordinated their efforts for this offensive. The FLA claimed that Russian Africa Corps forces—successors to the Wagner Group—and Malian troops were forced to withdraw from the strategic northern city of Kidal after being surrounded.

This escalation comes at a critical juncture for Mali, governed by a military junta led by Interim President Assimi Goïta since 2021. Despite the junta’s core promise to restore security after expelling French forces and UN peacekeepers (MINUSMA) in favor of Russian partnerships, the insurgency has intensified.

International condemnation has been swift. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a coordinated international response, while the African Union and ECOWAS issued strong denunciations. Neighboring military leaders, including Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré, also condemned the violence as President Goïta was moved to a secure location.

The loss of General Camara, a key architect of the junta’s military strategy, leaves a significant void in the government’s leadership at a time when the nation’s security appears more fragile than ever.
