Three people have died after being struck by a vehicle along the Norton–Murombedzi Road, in one of two fatal road incidents reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) over the weekend.
According to ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the fatal crash occurred at around 7:30 pm on Saturday, 28 March 2026, at the 54km peg along the Norton–Murombedzi Road. Police said the victims were seated by the roadside when a motorist driving a Tata truck towards Murombedzi lost control of the vehicle.
“The driver veered off the road to the left and struck the victims,” Nyathi said.
Two people died instantly at the scene, while a third later succumbed to injuries at Father O’Hea Hospital. A fourth victim and the truck driver are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.
In a separate incident, police have arrested Everson Masuka (48) in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred earlier on the same day in Harare. The crash happened at approximately 5:30 pm along Samora Machel Avenue, near the Showgrounds. Nyathi said Masuka, who was driving a Nissan Hardbody towards Chegutu, allegedly swerved to avoid a collision with a vehicle in front of him.
“In the process, he struck a pedestrian who was walking along the roadside,” Nyathi said.
The 45-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, died at the scene after sustaining severe head injuries and fractured legs. Police said the victim was dragged for about 20 metres. Masuka allegedly fled the scene after the incident but was later apprehended by authorities.
The Zimbabwe road accident fatalities in 2026 have raised fresh concerns over road safety, particularly involving loss of vehicle control and hit-and-run cases. Traffic safety expert Gift Mugano said enforcement and driver behaviour remain critical:
“Many accidents are preventable through adherence to speed limits and improved driver awareness, especially on busy and poorly lit roads.”
The twin tragedies highlight ongoing risks on Zimbabwe’s roads, with police urging motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant at all times. Authorities continue to investigate both incidents as part of broader efforts to reduce road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe.
