Police in Manicaland have detained two 16-year-old schoolboys following the circulation of a viral video that allegedly depicts the sexual assault of a fellow pupil at Masasi High School in Marange.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed on Monday that investigators had located the 17-year-old complainant and the two suspects.

“The ZRP has located the complainant (17) and the two suspects, both aged 16. More details will be released as inquiries continue,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

The incident came to light after a graphic video spread rapidly on social media, accompanied by commentary alleging that it showed the two boys taking turns to assault the victim while filming themselves. Police have not yet publicly verified the video or confirmed the identities of those depicted, stressing that the matter remains under active investigation.

Authorities recorded a formal statement from the complainant as part of routine procedure and placed the two suspects in custody pending further inquiry. Police declined to disclose specific details about possible charges, forensic steps, or the handling of digital evidence, citing the sensitivity of the case and the fact that all parties are minors.

Education and child protection officials are expected to work with law enforcement to ensure counselling and safety measures for pupils at Masasi High School. The incident has sparked strong reactions online, with child-rights advocates calling for greater digital safety education and stronger school-based safeguards.

The case has also reignited debate on how Zimbabwean authorities handle sexual violence among minors, particularly where digital recording and online distribution compound the harm. Police emphasised that further information would be provided once investigations are complete, and reiterated their focus on protecting the welfare of the complainant and ensuring due process for the juvenile suspects.
