Zimbabwean mixed martial arts star Temba Gorimbo has announced his retirement from professional MMA competition, ending a remarkable journey that inspired fans across Africa and beyond. The 35-year-old welterweight fighter, popularly known as “The Answer,” confirmed the decision through an emotional social media statement in which he admitted that failing to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a UFC world champion weighed heavily on him.
“Thank you to UFC and everyone,” Gorimbo wrote. “I dared to be someone and something and failed. Gave all I can in the sport and I am walking away from the sport. My dream was to be a UFC champion, and if I cannot be that, I am going to walk away.”
Gorimbo retires with a professional MMA record of 14 wins and 7 losses after a turbulent final chapter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
“It’s not easy but I’ve tried. Maybe I will make a comeback as a coach or manager someday, but for now, the focus will be my family. I am officially retired from MMA as an athlete,” he added.
The Zimbabwean fighter had enjoyed a sensational start to his UFC career, earning international attention with a devastating 32-second knockout victory over Pete Rodriguez and a dominant win against Ramiz Brahimaj.
However, his momentum later slowed following a series of difficult defeats inside the Octagon. His title ambitions suffered a major setback after losses in late 2024 and November 2025 before his final fight ended in heartbreak. On 2 May 2026, Gorimbo lost a split decision to Australian fighter Jonathan Micallef at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
Beyond his fighting career, Gorimbo became internationally admired for his extraordinary personal story of resilience and perseverance. Born in Bikita, Masvingo Province, the fighter was orphaned at a young age and endured severe hardship growing up in rural Zimbabwe. He later crossed illegally into South Africa as a teenager in search of opportunities, surviving dangerous encounters during the journey. After discovering mixed martial arts, Gorimbo steadily rose through the ranks of Africa’s Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC), eventually winning the welterweight championship in 2019. His move to the UFC in 2023 transformed him into one of Zimbabwe’s biggest sporting success stories.
Gorimbo’s humility and generosity earned him global admiration beyond the cage. After securing his first UFC victory, he revealed he had only US$7 left in his bank account because he had spent his fight earnings drilling a solar-powered borehole for villagers back home in Zimbabwe. The story caught the attention of Hollywood actor and former wrestler Dwayne Johnson, widely known as “The Rock.” Johnson later surprised Gorimbo by gifting him a fully furnished house in Miami to support the fighter and his family. The emotional gesture became one of the most celebrated human-interest stories in modern combat sports.
Although Gorimbo never achieved his dream of becoming a UFC champion, sports analysts say his impact on Zimbabwean MMA remains historic. Sports commentator Langton Nyakwenda said Gorimbo inspired many young athletes to believe international success was possible despite difficult beginnings.
“Temba Gorimbo represented hope, resilience and determination. His story goes beyond titles and victories,” he said.
Gorimbo leaves the sport as one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised international athletes and a pioneering figure for African MMA fighters on the global stage.
