Harare – A suspected domestic violence incident in the upmarket suburb of Glen Lorne has left one man dead, and his wife hospitalised after a shooting that police believe was triggered by a family dispute. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has shocked residents after it emerged that the couple’s four children were present when the violence unfolded.

According to preliminary reports, tensions between Givemore Tawanda Madzinga and his wife, Nelisa Madzinga (40), began on Thursday evening following a phone call believed to have come from another woman. Sources say the disagreement escalated overnight, culminating in a violent confrontation the next morning at the family home along Castle Close.

Police are treating the matter as a suspected murder-suicide, a classification often used in domestic violence-related cases pending full investigations.

On Friday morning, Madzinga allegedly assaulted his wife and their children before the situation turned deadly. Nelisa reportedly urged him to report the matter to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at Highlands, but he refused. She then attempted to leave the house to make a report herself. As she moved toward the garage, gunshots rang out.

“She said she heard shots and then felt a sharp pain in her shoulder,” a source familiar with the incident said.

The couple’s children, aged 14, 12, 9, and 8, were inside the house at the time, raising concerns about the psychological impact of the incident. A neighbour who responded to the gunfire described the scene:

“We heard gunshots and rushed in. We found him with a gunshot wound to the neck, and she had been injured,” the neighbour said.

The neighbour added that Nelisa indicated the dispute stemmed from the phone call her husband had received.

Nelisa was rushed to Avenues Clinic, where she is receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police recovered a licensed 6.35mm FN Browning pistol at the scene, reportedly registered under Madzinga’s company. The deceased’s body was transported to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. Domestic violence experts warn that such incidents often escalate rapidly when underlying conflicts are left unresolved.

“This tragedy highlights the dangers of unresolved domestic disputes, especially where firearms are involved,” said a Harare-based social worker who declined to be named. “Early intervention and support systems are critical.”

Residents in Glen Lorne described the incident as deeply disturbing in a suburb typically known for its quiet environment.

“This is not something we expect here,” said one resident. “It’s heartbreaking, especially for the children.”
