Gwanda, Zimbabwe- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have launched an investigation into a devastating fire that claimed three lives at the Lone Mine 50 Compound in Makwe, Gwanda. The victims, who are yet to be identified, were sleeping in a cabin when the blaze broke out at approximately 10:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
According to official police reports, the fire moved with such speed and intensity that the occupants were unable to escape.
The Victims: All three individuals were burnt beyond recognition, making immediate identification impossible.
Current Status: The remains have been transported to the Gwanda Provincial Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations and potentially DNA profiling will be conducted.
The Location: Lone Mine 50 Compound is a residential area typically housing mine workers and their families, where structures are often closely packed.
While the specific cause of the Lone Mine fire remains unknown, the ZRP's forensic and fire departments are currently on-site. Investigations are focusing on several common risk factors in mining compounds:
Electrical Faults: Issues with makeshift or overloaded wiring.
Unattended Heat Sources: Use of candles, paraffin lamps, or indoor cooking fires.
Structural Material: The use of highly flammable materials in cabin construction accelerates fire spread.
In light of this tragedy, local authorities are urging residents in mining compounds to:
Ensure all cooking fires are fully extinguished before sleeping.
Avoid the use of illegal or sub-standard electrical connections.
Maintain a clear "fire break" or space between wooden or plastic cabins to prevent rapid spread.
