LIVERPOOL, England – Liverpool Football Club has officially parted ways with head coach Arne Slot after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that saw the Reds finish fifth in the Premier League, just one year after winning the league title under the Dutch manager. The club confirmed Slot's departure on Saturday, announcing that the process of appointing a new manager is already underway. In a statement, Liverpool said:

"Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way."

Slot joined Liverpool in June 2024 as the successor to legendary manager Jürgen Klopp and enjoyed immediate success at Anfield. During his first season in charge, he guided Liverpool to their 20th English league title, earning widespread praise and being named LMA Manager of the Year. He also led the club to the Carabao Cup final and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

However, Liverpool struggled to maintain that momentum during the 2025/26 season. Despite securing Champions League qualification for a second consecutive year and reaching the quarter-finals of Europe's elite competition, the Reds endured a difficult domestic campaign and ultimately finished fifth in the league standings. Reports indicate Liverpool finished 25 points behind champions Arsenal, with performances falling below expectations despite significant investment in the squad.

In a joint statement, Liverpool's ownership group acknowledged that removing Slot was a difficult decision but insisted the club needed a new direction.

"The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves successful," the club said.

The owners praised Slot's leadership, professionalism, and willingness to embrace responsibility during challenging periods.

"From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, but embraces it."

They added: "At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward."

Liverpool have not yet named a replacement, but several reports have linked former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola with the vacancy after his impressive work guiding Bournemouth to European qualification. The managerial change marks the end of a brief but eventful two-year spell for Slot, who leaves Anfield with a Premier League winners' medal and a place in the club's history for delivering Liverpool's record-equalling 20th league title.

While his second season ultimately proved disappointing, Liverpool's statement made clear that the club's decision was not intended to diminish his achievements.

"Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield."
