The Chitungwiza Municipality has announced that rehabilitation works on a key section of Seke Road will begin on Monday, May 4, 2026, with completion expected within eight weeks.

The project will cover a 3.5-kilometre stretch from the Velvet Fuel Station junction in Unit G to the Unit H junction in Chitungwiza, according to acting town clerk Japson Nemuseso.

“Chitungwiza Municipality wishes to advise all road users, businesses operating on road servitudes, and other stakeholders of an upcoming eight-week road rehabilitation project along Seke Road,” Nemuseso said in a statement issued on Thursday. “The works will cover a 3.5-kilometre stretch from the Velvet Fuel Station junction in Unit G to the Unit H junction.”

The resurfacing works have been commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and awarded to contractor Moresurface Investments, which is expected to move on site from the project start date.

As part of the project, the contractor will establish a temporary campsite at the driving school grounds near Zuva Fuel Station, which will serve as the operational base during construction.

Authorities have warned that businesses and individuals operating along the road service within the affected stretch must vacate the area to allow for the smooth implementation of the works.

“Accordingly, all individuals and businesses operating along the servitude within this stretch are advised to vacate the area to allow for the smooth and efficient execution of the works,” Nemuseso said.

Seke Road is a major transport corridor linking Chitungwiza to Harare, carrying heavy daily traffic including commuter omnibuses, private vehicles, and commercial transport. The rehabilitation is expected to improve road conditions, reduce travel time, and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians.

However, officials cautioned that temporary disruptions are likely during the construction period, with possible lane closures and traffic diversions.

“All road users and stakeholders are encouraged to cooperate with the contractor and adhere to any guidance provided to ensure the project is completed safely and within the stipulated timeframe,” Nemuseso added.

Urban planning experts say road rehabilitation projects are critical for improving mobility and supporting economic activity, particularly in densely populated areas such as Chitungwiza.

“Upgrading key routes like Seke Road helps reduce vehicle damage, improves traffic flow, and boosts business operations,” said a Harare-based infrastructure analyst. “But effective traffic management during construction is essential to minimise disruptions.”

Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow official updates from the municipality and traffic authorities throughout the duration of the project.

The works form part of broader efforts by the government to rehabilitate critical road infrastructure across urban centres.
