McDonald’s restaurant in Johannesburg after shooting

JOHANNESBURG – Three foreign national shop owners were shot and killed in a brazen daylight attack inside a McDonald's outlet in the Johannesburg central business district, sparking renewed concern over violent crime in South Africa’s economic hub. The shooting occurred on Monday, 27 April 2026, at the corner of Jeppe and Smal Streets in Johannesburg, where the victims were reportedly having breakfast when gunmen stormed the restaurant and opened fire.

According to police, two masked suspects entered the fast-food outlet and began shooting before fleeing the scene moments later. Emergency responders arrived to find three men, believed to be aged between 30 and 45, critically injured. All were declared dead at the scene. Authorities say the victims are believed to be foreign nationals involved in retail businesses in the city, although their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department quickly sealed off the area, while a large-scale manhunt was launched for the suspects. In an initial update, the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety department said,

“JMPD CCTV Reaction Unit is attending to a shooting incident… Emergency services have been activated and the area is being secured.”

Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, condemned the attack and assured the public that investigations are underway.

“No stone will be left unturned during the investigation of the incident,” he said.

The South African Police Service has not yet confirmed a motive, but investigators are exploring multiple angles, including possible targeted violence linked to business rivalries or organised crime.

The incident has heightened fear among residents and business operators in Johannesburg’s inner city, where violent crime has been on the rise. Ward 59 councillor Sthembiso Hlatshwayo described the situation as alarming, noting that another fatal shooting had occurred on the same street just hours earlier.

“Even yesterday, someone was shot on this very same street… which means four people have been shot and killed in this street in a space of hours,” he said. “This raises serious concerns about safety. As a councillor, I’ll have to look into this, working closely with the police.”

Local business owners say the attack underscores growing insecurity in the CBD, with some expressing fears that targeted violence against foreign nationals could further destabilise trading communities.

The SAPS has urged members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“We appeal to anyone with information to come forward or report anonymously via the SAPS crime line 08600 10111 or their nearest police station,” police said.

No arrests have been made so far, and investigations remain ongoing.

The killings have reignited debate around crime prevention and policing in Johannesburg, with calls for increased surveillance, visible policing, and community engagement. Analysts warn that unless decisive measures are taken, incidents of violent crime could continue to undermine public safety and economic activity in one of Africa’s busiest urban centres.
