MUKUMBURA — A somber atmosphere has descended upon the Mukumbura business community following a devastating fire incident on Sunday, April 26, 2026, which claimed the lives of two young children. The blaze, which authorities allege was triggered by the presence of petrol, has ignited urgent discussions regarding the storage and handling of hazardous flammable substances in commercial and residential areas.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the fatal fire engulfed a shop where the two minors were sleeping. The severity of the blaze was such that the children were reportedly burnt beyond recognition. In addition to the tragic loss of life, two adult males sustained burn injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment. Property damage was extensive, including the destruction of a vehicle and the shop structure itself, though the full value of the losses has yet to be ascertained.
The ZRP has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. While the primary focus remains on determining the exact cause, officials are using the incident to reiterate the dangers of keeping highly flammable materials in non-designated areas.
“The ZRP urges the public to exercise caution when handling flammable substances and avoid storing such materials in residential or business premises, in order to safeguard lives and property,” the police statement read.

Echoing these concerns, Maxwell Mupotsa, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Mashonaland Central provincial spokesperson, issued a stern warning against the storage, sale, or use of hazardous materials in residential areas. The proximity of such dangerous items to living spaces is a violation of safety protocols and poses an immediate threat to community members.
The Mukumbura incident serves as a grim reminder of the lethal risks associated with improper fuel storage. As investigative teams continue their work on the ground, the community is left to grapple with a tragedy that experts suggest was potentially preventable.
Authorities are expected to increase inspections in the coming weeks to ensure compliance with safety regulations. For business owners and residents, the message is clear: the storage of petrol and other hazardous materials must be managed according to strict legal and safety standards to prevent further loss of life.
