BEITBRIDGE – A 35-year-old man from Beitbridge has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison after raping a woman before falling asleep in her home, giving the victim time to escape and alert neighbours. Adam Sibanda, of Malala Village under Chief Sitaudze, was convicted of rape by the Beitbridge Magistrates' Court.
Magistrate Charity Maphosa sentenced Sibanda to 17 years' imprisonment, with two years suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the specified period, leaving him to serve an effective 15-year jail term. The court heard that the offence occurred on November 21, 2025, when the 48-year-old complainant was alone at her home.
Prosecutor Olivia Chamutinya told the court that Sibanda approached the woman's house during rainy weather and asked to be allowed inside.
When the complainant refused to open the door, Sibanda allegedly found an unsecured window and forced his way into the house. Realising the intruder had gained entry, the woman unlocked the door and attempted to flee. However, the court heard that Sibanda chased after her, caught her outside the house and dragged her back inside before forcing her onto a bed and raping her.
After the assault, Sibanda allegedly fell into a deep sleep while still inside the complainant's bedroom. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the victim quietly escaped from the house and ran to her mother's nearby residence to seek help. The two women returned to the house and found Sibanda still asleep and unclothed. They then alerted members of the community, who gathered outside the house before the accused awoke. The court heard that Sibanda escaped through a window after being awakened by the noise of the crowd. He was later arrested, prosecuted and convicted of rape.
In passing sentence, the court took into account the seriousness of the offence and the trauma suffered by the complainant. Authorities continue to encourage survivors of sexual violence to report offences promptly and seek medical, psychological and legal assistance.
