Bolt Cutter Bus Conductor Jailed Seven Months for Assaulting Passenger Who Demanded Refund

MUTOKO – A Bolt Cutter Bus Service conductor has been sentenced to an effective seven months in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting a passenger who demanded a refund after discovering the bus was overcrowded. Ranjisi Andrew Manyati (45), of Mutoko, appeared before Mutoko Magistrate Panashe Matongo facing charges of assault and theft arising from the incident, which occurred at Domborembudzi Business Centre in Murehwa last week.

The court heard that Jonathan Nyoni (21) and his friend, Chaseman Chikuti, were travelling to Mutoko after a mushikashika (pirate taxi) driver paid US$20 to the conductor to cover their bus fares, with the balance expected to be refunded. However, after boarding the bus, Nyoni realised there were no available seats and decided not to travel. He requested a refund of his fare.

Senior public prosecutor Simbarashe Samanyanga told the court that Manyati refused to return the complainant's money and instead instructed the bus driver to depart. When Nyoni attempted to recover his money before the bus left, the situation turned violent.

"The accused refused to refund the complainant's money and instructed the driver to leave. As the complainant attempted to recover his money before the bus departed, the accused repeatedly punched and slapped him before wrestling him to the ground. He then kicked him several times in the face while he was on the ground," Samanyanga told the court.

The assault only ended after other members of the bus crew intervened and restrained the conductor. Nyoni later reported the matter to the police before being referred to Musami Hospital for medical examination and treatment.

The court heard that Manyati was subsequently arrested and charged with both assault and theft after failing to refund the passenger's money. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Magistrate Matongo sentenced Manyati to nine months' imprisonment, but suspended two months on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective seven-month prison sentence.

The conviction follows public outrage over a video of the assault that circulated widely on social media, prompting calls for greater accountability within the public transport sector. The case also serves as a reminder to public transport operators and crew members that disputes with passengers should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the law.
