Six Killed, Six Injured After Kombi Plunges Into Water-Filled Gully Near Tynwald Flyover

Six people were killed and six others injured after a commuter omnibus veered off the Harare-Bulawayo Road and plunged into a water-filled concrete gully near the Tynwald Flyover late on Wednesday night. The fatal crash occurred at about 10pm on 29 July 2026 near the Harare Drive junction, prompting an emergency response from police and medical personnel.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident in a statement issued on Thursday, saying investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the commuter omnibus was carrying 11 passengers when it left the roadway and plunged into a deep concrete-lined gully filled with water.

"Six people were killed while six others were injured when a kombi with 11 passengers on board veered off the road and plunged into a deep concrete-lined gully which contained water," Commissioner Nyathi said.

Police said the accident occurred near the 9-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, close to the Tynwald Rail Road Flyover. Authorities have not yet disclosed what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The bodies of the six deceased victims were taken to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The six injured survivors were admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment. Police said efforts were continuing to identify all the victims and notify their next of kin.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured a speedy recovery," Commissioner Nyathi said.

Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the condition of the vehicle, the state of the road and other possible contributing factors. No further details have been released regarding the identities of the victims or whether the driver was among those killed or injured. The latest tragedy adds to Zimbabwe's growing road safety concerns, with fatal crashes involving public transport vehicles continuing to claim lives on the country's highways.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits and ensure that vehicles are roadworthy, particularly during night travel. Authorities said further information will be released once investigations have progressed.
